Roomful of Teeth & Caroline Shaw inaugurent le Festival Musique(s) Rive Gauche
Le Festival Musique(s) Rive Gauche à la Salle Colonne, créé cette année par l'Association La petite musique bleue est, selon la Directrice artistique Coline Vandenberghe, un « rêve debout » qui a survécu à de nombreuses difficultés de préparation et de financement liées à la crise sanitaire. Au centre des répertoires figure la compositrice américaine Caroline Shaw, la plus jeune lauréate du Prix Pulitzer dans la section musique, il y a 9 ans, à l'âge de 30 ans seulement. Trois œuvres pour 8 voix sont présentées pour la première fois en France : The Isle (L'île) et Partita for 8 voices de Caroline Shaw, entre lesquelles s'intercale Beneath (En dessous) de Caleb Burhans, l'un des compositeurs commissionnés par Roomful of Teeth pour étendre leur répertoire. L'ensemble vocal américain, composé de Caroline Shaw elle-même, Cameron Beauchamp, Taylor Ward, Martha Cluver, Eric Dudley, Estelí Gomez, Avery Griffin et Virginia Warnken Kelsey, se donne en effet pour mission d'établir un « répertoire sans frontières ». Effectivement, les œuvres présentées dans la soirée manifestent cette mission : elles explorent les caractéristiques et le potentiel de la voix humaine au moyen de nombreuses techniques vocales et de traditions de chants du monde. Le programme intitulé « The Detail of the Pattern » (Le détail du motif) positionne la Partita comme à la fois synthèse et point culminant de la soirée.
Exploration et défi de la voix humaine jusqu'à sa puissance évocatrice
Dans une ambiance d'intimité, dans la Salle Colonne, drapée de velours rouge vermillon et illuminée par des projecteurs rouge clair, les premiers chuchotements de The Isle semblent surgir de l'obscurité -de la salle, mais aussi de notre vie intérieure- par sa puissance évocatrice. Figurant le texte de Shakespeare tiré de La Tempête « Come unto these yellow sands » (Venez sur ces sables dorés), la composition est tour à tour une invitation au voyage et un jeu continuel de la texture comme de la dimension sonore qui s'effectue sur tous les registres. Les mêmes jeux de techniques et de nuances se poursuivent dans Beneath de Caleb Burhans.
Comportant trois phases, Beneath montre trois différentes manières d'explorer la capacité, les caractéristiques et l'étendue de la voix humaine. La première phase souligne la texture sonore ponctuée par le sifflet et le fredonnement en répétitions quasi-motiviques sous-tendues par le bourdonnement de la voix masculine dans le registre bas de l'unité sonore. Par moments, la voix frôle la sonorité d'instruments musicaux, dont notamment le registre bas qui se rapproche du trombone. Des jeux d'échos et de répétitions occupent la deuxième phase qui met l'accent sur la voix féminine. Celle-ci forme de multiples couches qui s'unissent dans un cri collectif provoquant une piqure sonore au moyen de la dissonance dans le registre haut. La troisième phase suscite une impression de gouttes sonores qui encadre la partie lyrique assurée par la voix féminine médiane, évoquant tour à tour des sentiments de mélancolie et de nostalgie qui surgissent des abîmes du souvenir. Ce dernier moment est une belle transition vers la pièce conclusive, la Partita for 8 voices, œuvre gagnante de Shaw qui lui valut le Prix Pulitzer de musique.
La Partita est une rencontre et un dialogue continu entre le chant, la parole, de nombreuses techniques vocales imaginables, ainsi que celles qui relèvent des traditions du monde. Cette composition, en effet, intègre le katajaq, le chant de gorge des Inuits, qui ponctue, au cours des quatre mouvements, les changements de contours et de phases sonores au sein d'un mouvement ou entre les mouvements. Le premier mouvement installe l'échange entre le chant et la parole sous forme d'alternances, d'écoulement, voire de soudure entre les deux. Le deuxième mouvement est un moment de tension, de puissance, d'exaltation qui touche tous les registres, ponctué par moments par le katajaq. Le troisième mouvement exploite le chant et la parole en faisant varier l'ouverture de la bouche pour produire des sonorités différentes. Dans le dernier mouvement, la voix masculine produit une basse rythmique qui prépare et soutient l'exaltation de la voix féminine. En somme, la soudure, les transitions et les alternances entre le chant et la parole se dotent d'une puissance évocatrice se réunissant dans la Partita. La musique assure progressivement sa "forme", se concrétise en images de la pensée qui atteignent, de manière personnelle, la capacité imaginative des spectateurs.
L'intégralité de la soirée laisse ainsi des empreintes qui relient aux artistes, celles, également, qui répondent à la vie intérieure. Les spectateurs sont surtout invités à repenser le chant et la parole, à les percevoir différemment.
